A short review by Broadcaster, Writer & Promoter Pete Feenstra
John O'Leary & Sugarkane at The Boom Boom Club, Sutton United F.C. on 12th November 2017

"INSPIRATIONAL!   Sugarkane enveloped us with deep grooves, impassioned playing, real feel, poise and presence, in a welcome celebratory contemporization of the blues.

Anchored by the solid foundation of bassist Ian Mauricio and powerhouse drummer Joachim Greve, and fired by the interwoven twin guitar work of Steve Wright and Jules Fothergill, Sugarkane built a musical platform that offered sundry possibilities, which they joyfully fulfilled.

Jools Grudgings counter-weighted thunderous Hammond with nuanced fills, while John O'Leary occupied a pivotal John Mayall style catalytic role in which his big toned harp and expressive phrasing were perfectly framed on a moving version of "Drifting Blues".

You can't beat a beautifully balanced sextet who share their sheer joy of playing with an appreciative crowd.  Bravo!"

I'm pleased to say that Sugarkane played a great gig at The North Wales Blues & Soul Festival last month. We're back on the scene again after a gap which feels too long but I'm happy to be back playing with these great guys. We have some shows in November in the London area, Norolk & Northampton.

Out now is a wonderful new video documentary on the history of Eel Pie Island. "Clinging To A Mudflat" is all about the music, residents, the fire and the boats. Eel Pie Island played a vital part in the birth of the British Blues Explosion playing host to bands like The Rolling Stones, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, The Downliners Sect, Savoy Brown, Cyril Davies, Long John Baldry et al. I play harp on the soundtrack and  over the credits. Take a look below or on YouTube, Vimeo, Daily Motion etc.
